How do I become a blasting engineer?
There are two routes. Via the academic route or the joining a blasting crew as a labourer. The academic route would result in a mining engineering qualification either a degree or college diploma such as a HND. On graduating the engineer would gain employment with a mining company in its drilling and blasting department. The engineer would probably be required to sit a test to gain a blasting licence. The other route working as a labourer with a mining or quarrying company assisting in charging blast holes, or perhaps working as a blast hole drill operator, the person would be required to sit a test to gain a blasting licence. Once the blasting licence is obtained it is a continuous learning process of professional development controlling vibration, improving fragmentation, optimisation and improving safety.
